Foaling and Breeding Season 2015

July 1, 2015

We had quite an eventful foaling season here at Stonehaven topped by a beautiful Tapit colt (photo by Linzay Marks) out of champion producer Steelin', dam of Shanghai Bobby. With almost 20 foals on the ground, for our boutique farm it's our largest crop yet.

Steelin'  is currently in foal to Medaglia d 'Oro, the top commercial sire.

With sires like Pioneer of the Nile, More than Ready, Medaglia d Oro, and Tapit we are very pleased with this new group of foals and 2015 matings.

After a 37 year drought ending with Triple Crown Champion American Pharoah, we are even that much more excited.  We have a nice Pioneer of the Nile colt, which is only the 3rd foal from the mare Electric Gold.  Her 2yo by Scat Daddy having just broke his maiden in England, and the mare herself being a half to a G3 winner, he makes for a promising prospect.

Our foal share partnership in the mare Wasted Tears has one foal of racing age which sold to Lane's End for $450,000 in last year's Keeneland September sale, Butler Field working impressively in Saratoga. She now has a Medaglia d Oro filly by her side. With Wasted Tears being out of a SW, a half to several other stakes winners, GSP, and she being a MGSW and earner of almost $1 million, this little filly is sure to carry all the right genes. Wasted Tears is currently in foal to Candy Ride, a proven race horse sire.

After foaling and raising Daredevil, a G1 winner, you can imagine we are looking forward to raising another More than Ready, this time a filly out of Long Approach (G2 placed.)  With only 3 foals of racing age, one being a home bred we currently own named Enduring Honor, we have all the confidence in her and her progeny. She's been bred back to and currently is in foal to the proven sire Tiznow. The dam of Daredevil, Chasethewildwind has been bred back to More than Ready.

Shanghai Bobby being bred and raised at Stonehaven made supporting him in his first year at stud easy! We have 2 foals on the farm by Bobby and we are very pleased. One out of a boarder mare owned by Mr and Mrs Chase, Leave a Message and the other out of Storm City Blues.

As the first foal out of G1 producer Chasetheragingwind, it's an honor to have Leave a Message at the farm.  She is in foal to Munnings and her dam to Uncle Mo.  Being Stakes Placed Storm City Blues has foaled a nice allowance winner in Broken Blues,  and has a strong Congrats yearling. The Shanghai Bobby is coming along nicely as well.  Storm City Blues is in foal to Violence.

Being share holders in Violence who had a full book almost before the season began last year and who was booked solid his second season as well it's great to see him busy.  He's a good looking stud who throws big, strong, good looking foals. We have 2 Violence foals at the farm. One out of SW Walloon, who's half to G3 winner Pleasant Hill and the other out of stakes producer Steph's Tee.   Walloon is in foal to Broken Vow and Steph's Tee to popular freshman sire Flashback!

Stakes placed Early Bird Road foaled a Lookin at Lucky filly. This mare recently has winner Four Inch Heels on the racetrack with All About the Girls racing stable who broke her maiden impressively at Monmouth last year.  With any luck she'll be a stakes producer and a good investment for any thoroughbred breeding operation. She's back in foal to Paynter.

Stakes placed and stakes producer Double Flyight has a Gio Ponti filly by her side. This mare has been very consistent for us, having a $200,000 yearling by Candy Ride and a $100,000 Northern Afleet we sold last year. Her foals look the part and this Gio Ponti will be no different. She's been bred to Paynter as well.

Half to Wilburn and Southern Sonata, Venetian Sonata is one of our best mares.  This filly by Midnight Lute is her second foal and we are very excited about her prospects.  She's a nice mare who has a Speightstown yearling this year and has been bred to More than Ready in 2015. We support her and are giving her every opportunity to produce a great race horse.

We look forward to the sales season this year, and will be looking into more investments in the near future, be it with mares, foals, or race horses.
