It's Yearling Season!
Its that time again, for some it has been that time for over a month now. With the Fasig Tipton July yearling sale around the corner and Saratoga August shortly after, those forward some would say above average yearlings have been under sales preparation for a while now.
Not necessarily as a rule, but for a boutique farm like Stonehaven we find shooting for the September sale at Keeneland ideal for our operation.
While we have yearlings by top sires like Tapit and Medaglia d 'Oro, we also have mid level yearlings by sires like Tale of the Cat and More than Ready. It makes for an efficient and stream lined sale season to offer them throughout the books of the Keeneland September Sale.
As such, the time of the year comes for the Keeneland Inspection. A group of friendly faces, the team comes by around the end of May, early June to see a few of our select offerings. While hoping for their approval, we also find it helpful. They've seen what other offerings are coming and can shed some light on where a particular yearling might shine and sell best.
As horse by horse comes out of their respective stalls, they are met with quite a group of onlookers, most of which haven't seen this many people ever before. While most are on their best behavior, there are the sudden jumps when 2 of the team members decide to "check out her height" at the same time, comical reliefs are always welcomed in a some what intense setting.
Another always welcome event are the responses. Typically those of Dr Mac Smith, who finds it hard to hide his excitement when he sees something he likes, whether it be the above average racy Pioneer of the Nile colt or the seemingly rare "big" and well put together More than Ready filly, its nice to hear that maybe just one of the offerings might just ring that bell in September.
With the requests in the wait to see which books the yearlings are assigned ensues and from here until sale day these horses will be among the most pampered animals in the world. With the best nutrition, hay and care available they'll hopefully move along to be at the their best come this fall.
