#DerbyWeek

May 2, 2017

It's that time of year again here in the bluegrass.  Oaks and Derby are just around the corner and we have a few favorites of our own.  As we round out breeding and foaling season and begin to prepare our yearlings for the sale we have quite a few yearlings, foals and matings represented by several stallions who are also represented in the classic races this weekend at Churchill Downs!

Kentucky Oaks

Ever So Clever (Medaglia d'Oro)

Mopotism (Uncle Mo)

Farrell (Malibu Moon)

Abel Tasman (Quality Road)

Salty (Quality Road)

Kentucky Derby

Always Dreaming (Bodemeister)

Practical Joke (Into Mischief)

Classic Empire (Pioneer of the Nile)

Gormley (Malibu Moon)

Irap (Tiznow)

Steelin', the dam of Champion Shanghai Bobby, currently has a Medaglia d'Oro yearling and while the sire has done plenty to keep popularity for the next few years the 2017 Kentucky Derby winner would be quite nice! In addition to the Steelin' yearling, Venetian Sonata, dam of G2 Placed Olive Branch will be heading to the Darley stallion shed to visit MDO this season.

Venetian Sonata recently foaled an Uncle Mo filly, given his success we feel very lucky to have one of his 2017 crop on the farm!

Stonehaven has been a big supporter of Malibu Moon, starting with the Wasted Tears '13 colt by the sire.  Recently we have two foals on the ground and have since sent one mare back to him, with one left to breed to him still.  Scooter Bird and Electric Gold have each a Malibu Moon by their side currently and one of our maidens, Debby d'Oro, in foal to him now with Long Approach revisiting him for the second time in her broodmare career.

Quality Road has had what some would call a banner year, having two fillies in the KY Oaks is just the icing on the cake.  While having, in my opinion, a modest stud fee, his sales numbers have a steady return on investment.  We are excited to have Easy Living, one of our best looking mares, in foal to him currently.

We will be sending a mare to visit Bodemeister, thankful Always Dreaming has since jumped up to secure his place as KY Derby contender.

One of our best pedigreed mares, G3 placed True Feelings is slated to visit Into Mischief very soon and if this mating produces a foal like her first two there will be quite the frenzy over it come September 2019! I hope he continues on to be a sire of sires, with a pedigree like this foal will have the potential is there.

While Pioneer of the Nile needs not to work much harder for popularity since producing the first triple crown winner in years American Pharoah, if Classic Empire can win it will truly take this sire the next level and join the likes of Tapit.  Our mare, Miz Kella, full sister to Shanghai Bobby is currently in foal to this good looking sire!

Irap has been the latest source of excitement for our team.  Since breeding to Tiznow twice in 2015 we have two yearlings by him on the farm.  One out of aforementioned Miz Kella and the other out of Long Approach.  While he is known as the BIG horse sire, these foals are of nice size and stand to hold their own come September.

So with all that being said, no matter the outcome, as always we pray for a safe trip for all horses and riders involved; Quick feet, smooth break and safe trip! Grab a slice of Derby Pie and a Mint Julep and enjoy the best 2 minutes in sports!
